Taking folic acid can increase the chances for a healthy pregnancy
At Live Oak Women’s Health, we help our patients achieve their health and family-building goals. Our San Antonio women’s clinic treats women at all stages of life, including those in their childbearing years. To promote optimal wellbeing during this time, and to reduce the risk of birth defects, we encourage our patients to make sure they get enough folic acid.
What is folic acid?
A manufactured version of folate, folic acid is a form of vitamin B9. Often, physicians recommend this supplement to address low levels of folate, as well as to reduce high homocysteine levels, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and thrombosis if left untreated. Additionally, it may improve other health concerns, such as depression, stroke, and decline in memory tasks.
How does this supplement prevent birth defects?
Our San Antonio women’s clinic doctors suggest that women of childbearing age take this supplement because it can help prevent birth defects in pregnancy. Research indicates that it can protect against serious conditions called neural tube defects (NTDs), including spina bifida and anencephaly.
With NTDs, babies are born with incomplete development of the brain and/or spinal cord. Because NTDs occur during the first few weeks of fetal growth, and many pregnancies are unplanned, proactively taking folic acid before you conceive can lower the risks of neural tube defects by up to 70%.
How much do I need?
In general, we encourage our patients to get at least 400 mcg of folic acid daily. If you are trying to conceive, aim for 400 to 1000 mcg, and start taking a prenatal vitamin that includes this important nutrient. Folate naturally occurs in certain foods, such as leafy greens, oranges, nuts, beans and whole grains, so adding these foods to your menu can boost levels too.
Are there side effects or possible interactions?
Most people tolerate this supplement well. You can safely take doses of up to 1 mg daily. Anything higher may cause upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, irritability, confusion and other issues. Taking too much for a long period of time could result in an increased risk for certain cancers and/or heart attack.
In our San Antonio women’s clinic, we are dedicated to keeping our patients healthy. If you are considering starting or expanding your family, we recommend taking folic acid every day. Contact our office for more information or to make an appointment.
